Up... 15 weeks!

Tonight we hosted our second movie night in our countdown to our Disney trip. When we picked our initial 15 movies, we wanted to include movies that some (or all) of us hadn't seen, so Cubby picked Up. He, Husband, and Lady A haven't seen it and I've only seen it once, so it was a perfect choice.

We started the evening with a walk around the neighborhood being Wilderness Explorers and doing a nature scavenger hunt. I used one that I got from the blog Live Love Speech. She's one of my favorite SLP (speech-language pathology) bloggers and I had just used the scavenger hunt at work. (There was an Up-themed one from Disney family, but it wouldn't print out correctly ☹️)

Since I didn't remember the whole plot all that well, I struggled with the food a bit. I remembered there were dogs, so hot dogs seemed obvious and I don't think you can have hot dogs without fries and/or baked beans! So we had Dug's Dogs and Fredrickson Fries. Full disclosure: I had to look up the character's names so we had a tie in! Grape soda was a must, since Ellie gives Carl the grape soda badge. Seriously, is there a greater, truer love story than Carl and Ellie anywhere in the Disney panetheon?

After watching, I saw the potential for a million other ideas- popcorn with chocolate (for Kevin- Snipe Snacks!), a replica of whatever Epsilon makes for dinner on the Spirit of Adventure- and I definitely should have had some balloons in the house. I also found a cute idea for an Adventure Book from Disney. It's more for the summertime; I think I'll print it for when school is out.

Dessert was the fun part! One of the best parts of these movie nights is how I can get Cubby involved in helping out. For now, we prep while the little miss is napping, but one day she'll be able to help, too! Anyway, I had an idea to make blue Jell-O like the sky, and then ended up finding Cloud Parfaits. Ours didn't quite look like those, but we had fun making them!

I came across these Balloon Bouquet Pops from Disney Style. I mean, if you're already loading up with All. The. Sugar, why not go all the way?? So we rolled with it. We had a Christmas Ornament cookie cutter which was the perfect shape (as per the video recipe), but in all honesty, the easiest way for us to do it was to spray our hands with cooking spray and just make ball shapes with our hands! Once we got them on the wax paper, Cubby made sure they were a bit flattened out. We waited about an hour before sticking in the skewers. 6 cups of cereal made about 12 pops, with some left over. I thought maybe using a mini-muffin tin would create a good shape, so I experimented with the left overs. It definitely made them more ball shaped, but it's not a big enough ball for the skewer. Those were perfect for Lady A's small fingers (plus giving a skewer to a 20 month old is probably not the best parenting move, right?!).

This movie was a hit with 3 out of 4 Lyons! Lady A was not impressed, except for when the balloons unfurled out of the chimney for lift off. Cubby tells me this is his new favorite movie and is quite happy that we will have it out of the library for a couple of weeks. I was a sobbing mess in the first 15 minutes and I definitely saw Husband's eyes get misty.

Next week we make our first foray into the traditional animation with.... The Little Mermaid!!

CoCo... 16 weeks!

Our first movie night wasn't even supposed to be a movie night! I had planned a Cinco de Mayo dinner of tacos and margaritas and then suddenly realized, "Duh! CoCo!" Cubby had gotten CoCo in his Easter basket and we loved it. It's such a beautiful story about the Mexican culture and traditions. If you haven't seen it, DO IT. And make sure you have tissues because the ending is just a total tear-jerker.

I found some easy printables for Cubby and Lady A to kill time with. I also loved the family tree printable. (Get your own here). Cubby was a little confused at first: "Ok these are my ancestors, but who are Lady A's ancestors?" Once we got that part sorted, he enjoyed filling it out. My mom took him to breakfast the next morning and he took it with him so that she could help him fill out her branches. I love that it was a way for him to learn more about past generations. When I was little, I heard so many stories from my great-aunts about our family. It was a different time, I guess, but I want that for my kids, too. This was a nice jumping off point for those kinds of conversations.

Anyway, I know that Cinco de Mayo is more of a US deal and an excuse to drink margs and Corona, but why not?! So I made some Chili-Lime Chicken Tacos and went with the crunchy tacos because that just seems more authentic to me lol. I knew we'd be having tequila in our margaritas, but I wanted to the kids to be able to participate so I found a recipe for virgin margaritas that turned out to be super delicious. A cup of OJ, 1/3 cup of lime juice, and about a cup of sugar all blended up and -BOOM- margaritas for all. I watered it down substantially for Lady A and she was still all about it.

Since I hadn't officially planned for this night, we hadn't planned on a dessert. BUT I found this recipe for Sweet & Spicy Popcorn that was totally delicious. I didn't have any chipotle powder so I subbed with chili powder. The spicy only came through on a handful of bites, so it was a perfect balance. It was a hit with everyone!

In the week since we watched, Lady A has asked for "GoCo" daily! I'm just glad we've expanded her repertoire beyond Frozen and Moana! Hopefully she'll ask for each week's movie over and over so that she's really ready for our trip in August!
